DAY3: TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

We will leave bright and early and drive to Tarangire National Park.  This will take approximately 2 hrs. on paved road.  After we have completed our paperwork at the gate, we will begin a morning game drive.  Tarangire is known for its elephant population and its beautiful landscapes which include a vast number of majestic baobab trees.  Here we will have an opportunity to shoot the elephants and their families and keep our fingers crossed that some may be frolicking in the Tarangire River that runs through the park.  We will watch with enthusiasm as the bull elephants cross in front of our jeeps and make their presence known.  This park is also home to many large African mammals such as the lion, leopard and buffalo.  After the morning game drive, we will head to our lodge check-in and have a wonderful lunch overlooking Tarangire River.  After everyone has finished their lunch, everyone is free to move about the lodge and shoot on their own or meet for a photographic session on LR editing.  In the afternoon, we will then head out and do a sunset game drive.  The hope is to find and capture the amazing light dancing on the faces of wildlife.  Since wildlife is unpredictable, we will look to our guides to help us spot those amazing moments that may present themselves. After shooting sunset and its spectacular light, we will head towards the lodge to enjoy a hot meal among our new friends and guides.

DAY 5:  NGORONGORO CRATER

Today finds us descending the crater very early in the morning to capture the magnificent sunrise.  The morning descents are mystical with the low hanging mist and is great for a few shots.  Ngorongoro National Park is a sunken volcano or as many say, the largest intact volcano caldera.  The crater spans 260 square klm and the rim is 2,400 meters high.  This park is home to the “Big 5”:  the lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant.  We will pack our lunch and dine in one of the most breathtaking parts of the park outside in the afternoon sun.  This park displays an abundance of wildlife and an opportunity to see the elusive black rhino if they should show themselves.  After enjoying an entire day in the Crater, we will begin our accent to the rim and head towards the Ndutu Conservation Area, in the Southern Serengeti.  The drive should take about 2 hrs. to reach the Ndutu Conservation Area.  We will then continue our game drive as we make our way to our lodge for the evening.

DAY 6:  NDUTU CONSERVATION AREA

Ndutu Conservation Area is known for its off-roading and an abundance of wildlife, which will give us ample opportunity to shoot the wildlife up-close.  This area is known for its vast plains and its abundance of wildebeests during migration from December to May, as it sits along the edges of Serengeti National Park.  When we locate a pride of lions and they are moving towards a hunt, then we can follow them in hopes of capturing once in a life time shots.  We will gather around and have our breakfast on the bonnet and enjoy the noises of the Serengeti while outside of the jeep.  It is an amazing experience to just sit and listen to the wildlife around you.  We will continue on with our off-roading in hopes of spotting a cheetah and a chance at finding him hopping onto our bonnet.  One of our guides is one of the most requested and sought after guides within Tanzania and he has uncanny luck at having a cheetah up on his bonnet.  So, we will keep our fingers crossed that this opportunity presents itself and the spectacular photography that will follow.  We will head back to camp for lunch and a bit of respite from the dust and bumpy roads.  The afternoon will be at your leisure and I will be presenting “Shooting Light and its Opportunities” if you care to join in the lecture.  As the afternoon light warms, we will jump back in the jeeps for an evening game drive.  The lighting opportunities are endless as we set about looking for some spectacular shots.  We will focus on the lions and cheetahs in hopes of finding them active.  We will end our day around the camp fire just before dinner and sharing some wonderful moments of our trip.

DAY 9:  CENTRAL SERENGETI

We will set out at sunrise to take advantage of the morning light and its breathtaking sunrises.  The Serengeti is known for its diverse landscape and staggering numbers of giraffe, eland, zebra, wildebeest, lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, Thompson’s gazelles, buffalo, 500 species of birds, Topi, and Grants Gazelles.  The shooting opportunities are endless as we make our way through the park.  Our first stop will be at the Hippo Pond.  Here we will have an opportunity to get out of the jeep and head over to the hippos that are situated down a steep incline and shoot from different advantage points.  Here is where you may choose to use a mono pod or take advantage of some of the wood fencing to steady your shot.  After we have exhausted our shots at the hippo pond, breakfast will be set out by our guides for our enjoyment.  We will take some time to enjoy the fabulous breakfast and the warmth of the early morning sun.  After breakfast, we will head out into the park and see if we can’t find a cheetah or two.  The radios in the jeep come in handy because we can listen for any sightings that other guides may have come upon.  We will head back to camp for lunch and a possible dip in the pool if anyone is interested.  I will be available for any one-on-one instruction for those interested or talk about any photographic opportunities you are still hoping to get.  We continue the day with an evening game drive before we call it a day.

This will be our last full day in the Serengeti, so we will make the most of our time.  We will do an early morning game drive with breakfast accompanying us on this drive.  We will focus on the lions and the vast numbers that roam this park.  It is possible that we may spend some extended time shooting a pride should we have the opportunity.  Sometimes it takes time for them to gather and possibly hunt, so we may be patient and watch for a while.  We will head back to camp for lunch and a bit of relaxation before heading out for our final sunset game drive.  Our evening meal will be a treat as the lodge has prepared us a bush dinner out under the stars.  It is a wonderful experience and it always a highlight of the trip.
